UMC Elects First Latinx Denominationwide Agency Head

United Methodist Church (UMC) Minister, Rev. Giovanni Arroyo becomes the first Latino head a denominationwide agency. 


On August 31, Rev. Arroyo, who was born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York City, will assume his role as the new general secretary responsible for the implementation of anti-racism work at a national and global level. 


Rev. Arroyo applied for the position in early 2021 and was elected for a multi-round interview process. The selection process was a combined effort of the UMC General Commission on Religion and Race and the UMC General Commission on Finance and Administration.
