Landmark Houses of Faith

For the past three years, the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City has been undergoing preservation of the Crossing Dome. After years of water damage and deterioration, the Cathedral now has a waterproof, copper roof that also provides thermal insulation.

Three new sites in New York City have been nominated for State and National Registers of Historic Places. The sites include the English Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Reformation, the Temple Israel of the City of New York, and the Prospect Lefferts Gardens Historic District.

Nominated sites are typically eligible for various public preservation programs and services. This includes state grants and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits. Check out some of our case studies for more preservation and adaptation projects

Celebration and Worship

As communities celebrate Passover, and Ramadan, and approach Easter, many are eager to come together as a community.

Trinity Church's Clergy and Choir are joined by hundreds of parishioners as they walk in a processional to celebrate the start of Holy Week in the City. In one historic house of faith, worshippers filled St. Patrick’s Cathedral to celebrate Palm Sunday last Sunday.

Three mosques in Astoria have received permits to play the Adhan, or call to prayer, outside during Ramadan. Encouraged by the approval, a fourth mosque has applied for a permit and awaits a response.

In previous years, mosques have received noise complaints for playing the call to prayer outside.

Affordable Housing

Across the country, on the West Coast, congregations are working to turn their land into affordable housing. A UC Berkeley study found roughly 38,800 acres of  land owned by different congregations across 42 California counties that could be repurposed for housing.

Houses of Faith Supporting Community

What started as a temporary shelter in 2020, has continued to provide a place for migrants from Africa looking for refuge. Imam Omar Niass’ mosque has provided food and shelter for over 900 migrants passing through since 2020.

Up north in Maine, the sale of the St. Louis Church has been approved and will become housing. The current plan is to create 20 apartments ranging from one to two bedrooms to create more affordable housing. Across the nation, local groups are working to find ways to provide affordable housing in their communities.
